Caring for Full-Grain Leather & Shearling

Full-grain leather is the highest grade of leather available — the top layer of the hide, complete with its natural grain, scars, and character marks. Unlike corrected-grain leather, which is sanded and embossed to uniformity, full-grain retains the hide's natural strength and its capacity to develop a patina that is unique to its owner.

**Cleaning the Leather** For day-to-day maintenance, a soft, dry cloth is sufficient. Wipe your jacket after wearing to remove surface dust and oils. For deeper cleaning, use a dedicated leather cleaner applied sparingly with a soft cloth, working in gentle circular motions. Never use household cleaners, baby wipes, or water in excess.

**Caring for Shearling** Brush shearling collars and linings gently with a soft brush after wear — this restores the pile and removes surface dust. For deeper cleaning, consult a specialist. Never use heat or direct sunlight to dry shearling, as this can cause the pile to mat permanently.

**Conditioning** Leather, like skin, benefits from moisture. We recommend conditioning every two to three months with a quality leather balm — our ILHAN Leather Balm is formulated specifically for vegetable-tanned and full-grain hides. Apply a thin, even layer with a soft cloth, allow it to absorb for thirty minutes, then buff gently with a clean cloth. Avoid conditioning shearling directly.

**Storage** Store jackets on a wide-shoulder hanger in a breathable garment bag — never plastic. Allow shearling collars to rest in their natural shape; do not fold or compress. Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

**Water Exposure** Full-grain leather is naturally water-resistant but not waterproof. If your jacket gets wet, blot — do not rub — with a dry cloth and allow it to air dry naturally at room temperature. Brush shearling once fully dry.

**Embracing Patina** Scratches, creases, and colour variation are not defects — they are evidence of a life well-lived. The gentle crease at the elbow of your aviator, the subtle darkening of the collar from wear — these are the signatures of ownership. Care for your leather, but do not fear its evolution.
